Total Football Café: Special Thank You Edition
When I lobbed my book Dallas ‘Til I Cry: Learning to Love Major League Soccer out into the world six months ago, I didn’t really know what to expect, except not to expect much. Independently publishing a book about soccer in America (a book about Major League Soccer no less) is akin to the ol’ tree falling in the forest with no one around to witness it – does it even make a sound? Well, thanks to readers like you, it has made at least a pin drop and produced several unexpected blessings, not least of which is being voted “Best Book” in World Soccer Talk’s 2014 MLS Talk Awards. My sincerest thanks to all readers who took time to vote for my book!
Another unexpected blessing through the process of releasing this book has been the tremendous support of FC Dallas fans and supporters groups who enthusiastically embraced the book. I was surprised by their generosity and eagerness to promote the book. As a result, I’ve made some new soccer friends I probably wouldn’t have otherwise met. I want to particularly thank David Chaffin of the resilient P1s for Soccer Talk blog/campaign, Brandon Huckabee and the Dallas Beer Guardians, Sean Dorwaldt and the Dallas Football Elite, and Bryan Jones and the North Texas Blues. I also want to thank Tobias Lopez, Buzz Carrick, Robert Hay, Christopher Harris, Big D Soccer, and Kelly Dearmore for their reviews, tweets, posts, and articles about the book (in case you missed Kelly Dearmore’s December 22, 2014 profile of the book and me for the Dallas Observer, check it out here). I’ve found a lot of kind support amongst the American soccer fan community.
I also want to thank my family – my brothers, parents, grandparents, and in-laws for their support. Love and support like this isn’t always automatic in families, so I’m very grateful that it is in mine. My 86-year-old Granddad hand-delivered a copy of my book to the Cleburne County library in Heber Springs, Arkansas (the small town I wrote about in the book where I played my first organized soccer) to add to their collection. I love that he did that of his own accord.
I’m still in the throes of my soccer-coaching season, thus the continued scarcity of Total Football Café posts. However, my writing will pick up as spring and the new MLS season approach and I hope you’ll stay tuned for some (hopefully) fun projects I have percolating for 2015…
